Mountain Rose Herbs

Since 1987, Mountain Rose Herbs has been a purveyor of high-quality, organic herbs, spices, teas, essential oils and other plant-based goodies for the home herbalist. We put people, plants, and planet before profit with everything we do: from sourcing organic botanicals, to cleaning up the wetlands and rivers near our campus, to becoming the first certified zero-waste facility in Oregon. It's not always easy being first, but that doesn't stop us from continually looking for ways to do business while leaving the lightest possible footprint on this Earth.

Sustainability Highlights

Our passion for organics is woven into every fiber and thread of Mountain Rose Herbs’ operations. We offer one of the most thorough selections of certified organic herbs, spices, and essential oils. When we review plant materials, contract with our family of farmers, or visit harvesting sites, we keep the health of our customers and the environment in the forefront. The benefits of supporting the organic movement and moving towards an organic lifestyle are immeasurable.

Processing Practices:

In recent years, we have outgrown the capacity of our regional organic herb mill, resulting in bottlenecks. So we decided to build a mill of our own! On September 27, 2018, we officially opened our own brand-new organic processing facility. This exciting event marks a whole new chapter for Mountain Rose Herbs, empowering us to effectively give more while taking less. Bringing our bulk herb processing in house will allow us to take our quality control to the next level, get customers the botanicals they love more quickly, and create local jobs—all while reducing our environmental impact. At our enviro-friendly facilities in west Eugene, we also handcraft in small batches many of our ready-to-use offerings. From salves, to skin creams, to extracts, and capsules, we make it all with care locally.

The first criteria for purchasing botanicals are the potential social and environmental impacts of growing, harvesting, and drying herbs. This applies to all botanical goods harvested and produced overseas, as well as right here in the United States. We policies in place to ensure workers get a fair market value for the goods they produce. Our first choice when sourcing herbs is always certified organic. If organic isn’t available, we will choose an ethically wildharvested or "cultivated without chemicals" option. If wild gathered material is harvested, each gatherer must fill out a "wild take audit" to ensure that our precious plant populations have only undergone a sustainable 10% take.

Mountain Rose Herbs was the first company in Oregon to receive a TRUE Zero Waste Facility Certification from Green Business Certification Inc. Not only did we make history in the state of Oregon, but we also achieved the highest available certification – Platinum! In 2017, we reused, composted, and recycled 97.6% of operational materials. An unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship dictates how we think about our waste management plan. We strive to cut all waste production by rethinking and redesigning our operational procedures to create a more dynamic approach to resource recovery, product design, and recycling. This path helps sustain our bond with the natural world, creates jobs, and saves money.

We are proud to have taken numerous steps to decrease energy consumption and the company’s overall carbon footprint. We use LED light fixtures, Energy Star rated appliances, and EPEAT certified computers. In 2015, Mountain Rose Herbs installed over 100 photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity for our main facility in Eugene, Oregon. The 25-kWh solar array installed on the roof will produce an estimated 32,604 kWh of power in the first year, saving money and investing in renewable energy. We’ve converted to 100% renewable energy by participating in our local utilities’ Greenpower program and offsetting carbon emissions with NativeEnergy.

We make every effort to reduce our water consumption inside and outside. We even have flushless urinals! Mountain Rose Herbs’ main campus, located on a 3.5 acre lot, includes a bioswale which naturally collects and filters all surface runoff water. This landscaping structure diverts the majority of our runoff into our biologically enhanced, on-site retention pond and rain garden, which are teeming with plants and animals that act as natural filters. This prevents polluted runoff from going into our rivers.

Our commitment to exceptional care and cultivation standards applies not only to our products, but also to the hardworking people who grow them. As a For Life- and Fair for Life-certified handler, the entirety of Mountain Rose Herbs’ business model and practices are thoroughly reviewed and evaluated annually by ECOCERT. These audits and on-site inspections of our workplace conditions, core labor practices, environmental programs, and local community relations call for surpassing traceability and transparency and affirming our commitment to the standards of For Life-certification.

Mountain Rose Herbs leads the industry in environmental stewardship, dedication to organic agriculture, fair trade practices, zero waste innovation, plant conservation efforts, and community support. Through this commitment, we hope to set a standard and encourage other businesses to care for the Earth as the Earth cares for us. Each year we publish a detailed report to measure and monitor our sustainability efforts.
Mountain Rose Herbs offers each of its employees three paid days each year to volunteer for Mountain Rose River Projects or any other community, environmental, and social cause in the state of Oregon of the employee's choosing. This amounts to a total of 24 hours of paid time earned annually for each employee.
Founded in 2009, the Mountain Rose River Project is a grassroots effort coordinated and funded entirely by our company. Each year, employees carry out 10-12 restoration projects through our Paid Time for Community Involvement Program. We partner with numerous state, federal, and nonprofit agencies, primarily focusing on riparian ecosystems, stream health, and fish habitat.
Mountain Rose Herbs also encourages employees to take alternative transportation to work through an innovative Alternative Commute Incentive Program. We pay our team $0.15 per mile if they carpool or ride the bus and $0.25 per mile for those who bike or walk. Every year, we award the employee who logs the most miles in each category an additional $250. Employees have access to a covered and locked bike depot, indoor lockers, showers, and a bicycle repair kit.
